Best Reddit Resources for FFL Gun Transfers

If you’re navigating an FFL transfer for the first time — or the tenth — Reddit is where gun owners share real-world experience. Below are the communities where FFL transfer questions get answered fast, plus the questions that come up most often.

Top Subreddits for FFL Transfer Questions

r/guns (3.5M+ members)
The largest general firearms community on Reddit. Search “FFL transfer” within the subreddit and you’ll find hundreds of threads covering transfer fees, problem dealers, private party vs. dealer transfers, and how to handle out-of-state purchases. Best for general questions.

r/gundeals (1.8M+ members)
Primarily a deal-sharing community, but FFL questions come up constantly — especially when someone buys a firearm online and needs to find a local FFL to receive it. The community maintains a list of recommended FFLs by state in the subreddit wiki.

r/ar15 (900K+ members)
If you’re transferring an AR-15 or rifle platform, this community has the deepest expertise on FFL requirements, Form 4473, and common pitfalls with online rifle purchases.

r/NFA (120K+ members)
Specifically for NFA items (suppressors, short-barreled rifles, machine guns). If you’re doing a Form 4 transfer, this is the right community — the process is significantly different from standard FFL transfers and requires a licensed dealer who handles NFA items.

r/CCW (550K+ members)
Focused on concealed carry, but frequently discusses handgun transfers, permit requirements by state, and finding local FFLs who handle private party transfers without hassle.

Most-Asked FFL Transfer Questions on Reddit (Answered)

How much does an FFL transfer cost?
Transfer fees vary by dealer. Most charge $20–$50 per transfer. Gun stores in competitive urban areas tend to run $20–$30; rural dealers or shops without much walk-in traffic may charge $40–$75. Always call ahead — some dealers have moved to flat fees, others charge per-firearm.

Do I have to use a specific FFL dealer, or can I choose my own?
You choose your own. When buying online, the seller ships to any FFL of your choice. Contact your local FFL first to get their shipping address, then give it to the seller. Never have a firearm shipped directly to your home address.

How long does an FFL transfer take?
Background check (NICS) results typically come back in minutes. If delayed, it can take up to 3 business days — after which the dealer can legally transfer the firearm even without a final response. Some delayed checks resolve within hours; a small percentage result in a denial or extended review.

Can a private seller ship a gun to my local FFL?
Non-licensed private sellers cannot legally ship handguns through USPS. They can ship long guns via USPS or common carriers in some cases, but the safest route is for the private seller to find their nearest FFL and do an FFL-to-FFL transfer. Your local FFL receives it from the seller’s FFL.

What do I need to bring to pick up my transfer?
A valid government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport). You’ll fill out ATF Form 4473 on-site and undergo a NICS background check. Some states have additional requirements (waiting periods, handgun purchase permits, etc.) — your dealer will walk you through it.

Can an FFL refuse to accept a transfer?
Yes. FFLs are not required to accept transfers from any source. Some dealers refuse to accept transfers from online sellers (to protect their own sales). Always confirm with your local FFL before completing the purchase.
