GunBroker FFL Transfer: How to Use GunBroker and Find a Local Dealer

GunBroker.com is the largest online firearms auction marketplace in the United States, with millions of listings from private sellers and licensed dealers. Buying from GunBroker is straightforward, but it does require coordinating with a local FFL dealer. Here’s exactly how the process works.

How GunBroker Works

GunBroker functions like eBay for firearms — sellers list items at a fixed price or with an auction format, and buyers bid or purchase. Sellers include both private individuals and licensed dealers. Buying from a licensed dealer on GunBroker is slightly simpler (no FFL required on the selling end), while private seller purchases require both parties to use FFLs if the sale crosses state lines.

Step 1: Find Your FFL Before Bidding

Before you place any bids, confirm your local FFL dealer’s information and transfer fee. This prevents the awkward situation of winning an auction and then scrambling to find a dealer. You’ll need to contact your dealer and confirm they will accept the transfer and what their fee is.

Step 2: Win the Auction or Buy It Now

Complete your purchase through GunBroker’s secure checkout. GunBroker itself doesn’t handle the physical transaction — you’ll be communicating directly with the seller for payment and shipping coordination.

Step 3: Send Your Dealer’s FFL to the Seller

Contact the seller and provide your dealer’s FFL information. Most sellers request a copy of the FFL license via email. Your dealer can provide this — they routinely email their FFL copy to sellers. GunBroker has a built-in system for submitting FFL information in some transactions.

Step 4: Seller Ships to Your Dealer

Once the seller receives your FFL information and payment, they ship the firearm to your dealer. Most GunBroker sellers use FedEx or UPS — both require adult signature for firearm deliveries. Shipping typically takes 2–5 business days.

Step 5: Pick Up at Your Dealer

Your dealer notifies you when the firearm arrives. Visit with your valid ID and payment for the transfer fee, complete Form 4473, pass the background check, and take possession. Total time from auction win to pickup is typically 5–10 business days.

Common GunBroker Mistakes to Avoid

Don’t pay for a firearm before confirming your FFL dealer will accept the transfer. Some dealers refuse certain types of transfers or have restrictions. Confirm the seller will ship to your state (some states have restrictions that sellers won’t navigate). Check seller feedback carefully — GunBroker’s feedback system is your best protection against unreliable sellers.
