How to read this tool

Recognized means the destination state honors a permit from your issuing state with no special condition beyond following that state’s carry laws. Restricted means it is honored only under a condition, most often one of three: the destination honors only a particular permit class (Idaho Enhanced, North Dakota Class 1, South Dakota Enhanced, Mississippi Enhanced, Tennessee Enhanced, and a few others), it honors only permits held by residents of the issuing state (Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Maine, New Hampshire, North Dakota, and Pennsylvania do this), or it honors only permits issued or renewed after a set date. Not recognized means carrying on that permit is not lawful there. California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Rhode Island honor no out-of-state permits at all.

Twenty-nine states have some form of permitless carry as of the source’s latest update, and each is marked in the grid. Permitless carry has its own age and eligibility rules that differ from permit recognition, so a state marked “Not recognized” for your permit can still allow you to carry permitless if you meet its rules, and a permitless state can still set a minimum age above what your permit requires. When in doubt, carry on the stricter rule.

Which permit is recognized in the most states?

Kansas (39), North Carolina (39), North Dakota (39), Ohio (39), South Dakota (39) lead the count in this dataset. Many travelers hold a non-resident permit from one of these states in addition to their home-state permit, but note the resident-only rule above: seven states will not honor a non-resident permit at all.

Does permitless carry in my home state let me carry in other states?

No. Permitless carry is a rule about who may carry inside that state. Other states recognize permits, not your home state’s permitless status. If you travel, a physical permit is what gets recognized.

How current is this data?

The tool is generated from the Handgunlaw.us state records, each of which carries its own last-updated date. The freshest record in the current build is dated 9/1/2026. We regenerate the dataset on a schedule and any time a state changes its recognition list.

What should I do before carrying in another state?

Check that state’s official reciprocity page (usually the Attorney General or State Police), confirm your permit class matches what it honors, and review that state’s duty-to-inform, vehicle carry, and off-limits location rules. USCCA’s free map above bundles those rules state by state.
